Many leading scientists call materials humanity’s biggest impact on the world. Some people question what will happen to society once no more petroleum for plastics on finite planet? And what if a cognac glass was made into a stool?
Incidentally, designer Keith Melbourne, in collaboration with manufacturer Palamont and materials organisation UNOIL made avant-garde cognac stools from bioplastic. The project aims to showcase that the world can be viewed differently in our search for regenerative design. This use of renewable and waste-based materials is a different way to look at the subject.
The stools are likely to contribute to a number of Green star point categories including Volatile Organic Compounds: Tenancy Fitout Items, Mat-3: Recycled Content and Re-used Products and Materials. The NABERS (IEQ) Indoor Environment Quality is also expected to benefit.
Research found Green Star rated buildings receive higher valuation, whist addressing “Sick Building Syndrome”, as well as the carbon footprint. This pilot project has been commissioned by Fuji Xerox Australia in search for new design approach to peak issues and the future of our society. The Global Industry Analysts research firm estimates that the market for green building materials could have sales of US$405 billion by 2015.

Keith has found he has a talent and passion for furniture design. His combination of design, engineering, management and commercial skills is unusual in the furniture industry but is proving to be a great asset. Motivated by his new found passion Keith has made rapid progress in the industry. In a short time Keith has completed a diploma in furniture design, developed a series of highly regarded furniture prototypes, and exhibited in 8 national design exhibitions including EDGE, VIVID, Workshopped and Launchpad. He has received a number of awards and his work has been widely published. Keith works with a range of design tools.
